Thanksgiving movies aren’t as common as those for other major holidays, which makes the good ones even more spectacular. The Current has curated a list of five movies about Thanksgiving with every possible genre we could find. Before we start, make sure the ones you are most thankful for are snuggled around the couch and get ready to gobble up these movies that we are so grateful for.

Free Birds (2013)

Reggie, a turkey voiced by Owen Wilson, gets pardoned by the president, and starts to live an easygoing life, but then meets Jake, a fellow turkey (Woody Harrelson) who wants his help with a secret mission. “Free Birds” is quite a random but unforgettable movie. The animators did an amazing job with the detail in the turkey’s face. This is just a fun and silly movie, perfect for spending time with family. This is such an outstanding movie because although it is a strange idea, these turkeys will for sure have an impact on American history!

Jim Henson’s Turkey Hollow (2015)

The Emmerson family goes to Turkey Hollow, a small town to visit their aunt Cly. Tim (Graham Verchere) and his sister Annie (Genevieve Buechner) are not pleased with Turkey Hollow and are so bored. The funniest moments all come from the characters. Tim and Annie decide to venture off to find the Howling Hoodoo, a monster the locals call a myth. Aunt Cly’s hippie persona feels just right, especially her unexpectedly adorable interactions with the town’s sheriff; this subplot is really the best thing in the whole movie. This is a kids’ movie that both parents and children will love. Overall the movie looks great, with a beautiful forest setting. It’s a great way to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Holidate (2020)

“Holidate” is a hilarious and heartfelt addition to the “holiday romcom” genre. Sloane, played by Emma Roberts, is tired of everyone wondering why she is still single during the holidays. While out to return some Christmas gifts she meets Jackson (Luke Bracey). The chemistry between the two actors is so great, which makes it particularly enjoyable to watch. They start a conversation and then come up with a crazy idea to “date” each other during the holidays. Everything is going great until Sloane starts catching real feelings for Jackson. The movie has an interesting plot with a good set-up between the two likable main characters.

Thanksgiving (2023)

In Plymouth, Massachusetts, an unknown masked killer is causing chaos in this small town, one year after a deadly Black Friday riot. This is actually one of the best slasher movies to come out in recent years. The plot is simple, the characters are simple, but the kills are amazing. At the beginning of this movie almost none of the characters are likable. And to be honest, they don’t become likable until maybe halfway through the film. The highlight of this entire movie is the way characters are killed off because it’s straight up brutal. The movie doesn’t shy away from showing gore. “Thanksgiving” is going to go down as one of the most pleasant surprises of 2023.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973)

After Peppermint Patty invites herself and her friends to Charlie Brown’s house for a Thanksgiving feast without Charlie’s knowledge, he suddenly needs to make dinner to have a great holiday. Watching this special brings the true meaning of Thanksgiving. Linus, Snoopy and Woodstock try to help Charlie fix this disaster! This movie is highly recommended because Thanksgiving requires “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” year after year; it is simply tradition. Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the Peanuts gang make the holiday more enjoyable. When you see this memorable classic film, prepare to smile and have a good old laugh.
