Evan Kemps, a West Bend East High School ninth grader, was selected to represent the state of Wisconsin at an eight-day FBI summer camp
The Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy Youth Leadership Camp takes place July 9-17 in Quantico, Virginia. Kemps’ father, a detective, made him aware of the camp as it closely resembled a camp he had attended earlier in his career.
With Evan’s goal to pursue a career in law enforcement he views the upcoming camp as a great opportunity. When asked how he felt about attending the camp he expressed excitement.
“I feel like it’s a good experience to have because leadership is important,” Kemps said.
The FBI program, open to students ages 14 to 16, selects 62 students annually to participate. Members of the camp participate in real-world experiences working to build resilience, a commitment to service and social responsibility. At camp Evan and other participants will engage in rigorous fitness training and presentations about leadership, managing errors and staying calm. Students will discuss resilience through nutrition, stress and time management. They will also explore local sites to more deeply understand American history.
The process of applying required an essay about the biggest factors facing teens and involved an interview with the West Bend Police Department. Kemps chose to pursue the topic of social media. His selection to the program recognizes his strong academic performance and dedication to his community.
Kemps’ achievement is a point of pride for West Bend and will serve as inspiration for other students to pursue unique opportunities that help them grow life skills.
