Students and Local Stores Surprised by Changes in Planner Policy

After learning that WBHS wouldn’t automatically provide planners this year, Office Max began producing its own version for students

By Miranda Paikowski, Current Staff

So far this school year, students have been scrambling for a sense of order.

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, many students at East and West High were disappointed that no planning books—a place where students can keep track of their calendar and assignments—were being handed out in resource. This is the first year that this has happened, so students found themselves confused and looking for an explanation. Continue reading

Why were juniors required to take the ACT WorkKeys test?

By Beth Williams, Current Staff

On the morning of March 4, the hallways of the West Bend High Schools were void of their usual noises of scraping shoes and student chatter. Instead, the junior classes from both East and West sat down to take what they thought was just another standardized test.

This test, however, came with a twist: this was the first time that this specific test was being offered to WBHS students. Continue reading

If you were to go looking for the East 2014 graduation mural, all you would find is a blank white wall.

This past summer, the recently created mural was painted over. The mural, which was located in the K hallway on the east side of the school, was hand-painted by graduating seniors in accordance with a longtime school tradition. Continue reading

“Two” Good to Change

VIEWPOINT

Combining East and West will limit opportunities

Beth_Williams_ResizedBy Beth Williams, Current Staff

In history books, America is often referred to as a “land of opportunity,” where each individual has a chance to obtain success and achievement. However, what happens when this invaluable opportunity is greatly reduced?

By combining our two high schools, students will miss out on the chances that multiple high schools offer. This means that fewer students will be able to participate in certain activities, such as sports.

If a one high school system had already been in place, then I too would have missed out on a great opportunity. Continue reading

Modest May program exposes clothing expectations

By Beth Williams, Current Staff

With the mercury rising, the students of WBHS knew what to do – change their attire in order to cool down.  Out came the short shorts, flip-flops, and tank tops.

Recently, both students and faculty have become troubled about the clothing that has accompanied this surge in warm weather.  Do students truly understand what kind of clothing is appropriate for school? Continue reading

High schoolers reminisce about Barton Elementary School

By Beth Williams, Current Staff

The Bobcat will soon become extinct in this area.  No, not the animal – the mascot of a local elementary school.

After the current school year is over, Barton Elementary School will close as part of the district’s restructuring plan. This school, which has been open since 1923, has served numerous generations of students, or Bobcats.

Many Barton alumni now attend East and West High, and they still carry childhood memories with them.  For a majority of its former students, Barton was not only the place where they received their first education, but where they made their first friends, too. Continue reading

Prevent Spread of Lice and Fear

District lice information needs updating

Nit_Comb

By Beth Williams, Current Staff

Have you borrowed a comb or brush lately?  Then, you may have a bigger problem than messy hair.

Head lice, small, wingless insects that live on the human scalp, can spread from person-to-person through items that have been in contact with the head of one infested with lice.  If you are concerned, see a school nurse immediately.  The nurse will explain how to exterminate the lice quickly and effectively, and even give you a handout in case you need to continue your treatment at home.

However, might this well-intentioned official handout contain misleading information? Continue reading

New TV commercial will feature many district students

By Beth Williams, Current Staff

As this year’s NFL season draws to a close, the most anticipated game, the Super Bowl, is still coming up.  Even people who do not like football will still gather around their televisions to watch the big game.  Why do they do this?  For one reason only: the commercials.

This year, the West Bend School District is creating its own commercials that will air during the district’s open enrollment period, which runs between January 3 and April 30.  By the time this project is finished, over 100 students district-wide will have participated in the filming of the commercial. Students may use Resource Time to learn about
finances at the Glacier Hills Credit Union

By Beth Williams, Current Staff

Credit cards are a wonderful tool, right?  You spend as much as you want, and someone else pays the bill.  Wrong.

Glacier Hills Credit Union, located near the auditorium, now offers WBHS students information about how to responsibly handle finances.  Starting this year, the credit union has been facilitating educational sessions to students during resource time.  On Thursday afternoons, students can be seen sitting on the floor eating food from the Nifty Nibble while learning about different aspects of the financial world, such as small loans, credit cards, and budgeting.
