Tooting Our Own Horn: NEWSPA Awards 2014

Wanasek and Smale earn top honors in statewide journalism contest

Students at West Bend East and West High took home seven awards in the 2014 NEWSPA contest for student journalism.

The Northeastern Wisconsin Scholastic Press Association gave blue ribbon honors to Natalie Wanasek for her academic news writing and to Mike Smale for his feature photography. Smale led all staff members with three prizes. All awards were given to The West Bend Current, the news blog advised by Eric Beltmann. Continue reading

Wiggle Me This: The Case of the Vanishing Lunch Seats

It was just an ordinary school day for East sophomore Megan Swope until she went to the cafeteria to find that her normal lunch seat near her friends had simply disappeared.

“I had to go and sit at another table,” said Swope. “It was really lonely.”

Occurrences like this one have been happening often this school year. Increasingly, many of the cafeteria tables in both East and West are losing one or more of their round seats. The cause of this epidemic, however, may not be limited to a single issue. Recently, several explanations have arisen as to why the valuable seats have been vanishing. Continue reading

Comidas para Familias Necesitadas

Translation: Meals for Needy Families

With the holiday season at hand, many programs are dedicated to helping families in need.  Though some campaigns, like that of the Salvation Army, are better known, local drives can be just as powerful.

On November 23, eight Spanish students and two Spanish teachers from WBHS participated in an event at El Centro Hispano in Milwaukee aimed at providing Thanksgiving dinners to needy families.  The volunteers set up an “assembly line” that produced a total of 1,500 complete meals in about two and a half hours. Popular teacher Tim Harder is leaving the
classroom for a job at the district office

At the end of the year students and teachers alike are faced with many goodbyes.  This time, parting must be done in the middle of the school year.

By the end of the semester, Technology Education teacher Tim Harder will leave the high schools to fill a new administrative position at the district office.  Over his nine years in West Bend, Harder has taught classes ranging from advanced digital imaging to black and white photography, and been in charge of in many extracurricular activities.  A well-known persona in the high schools, Harder will be dearly missed by students and staff.  Continue reading

finances at the Glacier Hills Credit Union

Credit cards are a wonderful tool, right?  You spend as much as you want, and someone else pays the bill.  Wrong.

Glacier Hills Credit Union, located near the auditorium, now offers WBHS students information about how to responsibly handle finances.  Starting this year, the credit union has been facilitating educational sessions to students during resource time.  On Thursday afternoons, students can be seen sitting on the floor eating food from the Nifty Nibble while learning about different aspects of the financial world, such as small loans, credit cards, and budgeting.
