Inside the Viral Wednesday Addams Dance Craze

Tim Burton and TikTok: Things just became weirder for the king of the bizarre.

The new Netflix show “Wednesday,” created, directed, and produced by Burton, is making headlines across the nation after a scene from the show featuring the odd dance moves of the titular Wednesday Addams went viral on TikTok.

The viral moment in question occurs in the show’s fourth episode, in a scene at a school dance. At the event, Wednesday, played by Jenna Ortega, performs a swirling and chaotic dance that everyone else at the party can’t help but stare at. Her bizarre moves are set to “Goo Goo Muck,” a 1981 song by the Cramps. Ortega said that her dance, which she choreographed herself, was inspired by “Lene Lovich music videos, Siouxsie and the Banshees performances, and (Bob) Fosse.”

TikTokers quickly noticed Ortega’s eccentric dance and decided to recreate it themselves. These videos led to an extreme surge in popularity in “Goo Goo Muck,” catapulting it from 2,500 streams to over 134,000 streams, a whopping increase of around 9,500%.

This is similar to the meteoric rise in popularity of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill,” which was famously used in “Stranger Things,” another Netflix show. Celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Marina Diamandis, and Lady Gaga also took part in the recreations of the “Wednesday” dance, showing off their own version of Ortega’s steps.

Lady Gaga also has a different connection to the “Wednesday” dance. Recently, TikTokers have substituted a sped-up version of Gaga’s 2011 song “Bloody Mary” off her album “Born This Way” into the dance. The song also experienced a massive surge in popularity, being featured in over 1.4 million videos in slightly over two weeks. “Bloody Mary” saw a 1,800% increase in streams, racking up over 2 million in the first week of December.

In response to this craze, the official Wednesday Addams Twitter account tweeted, “I see you doing my dance moves to @LadyGaga’s Bloody Mary. I understand she is followed by little monsters. I approve.”

“Slay Wednesday!” Gaga responded. “You’re welcome at Haus of Gaga anytime (and bring Thing with you, we love paws around here).”
