Two student groups are bringing an energetic groove to the West Bend High Schools.
The WBHS Black Student Union has collaborated with the Multicultural Club to invite Milwaukee’s Alafia Drum & Dance Collective to its annual Black History Month Celebration. Speakers, presentations, student art, fundraisers and a raffle will also be part of the program. The event, which is free and open to the public, is at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 24 in the WBHS Silver Lining Arts Center. Doors open at 6 p.m.
The Alafia Drum & Dance Collective will perform for 45 minutes.
During the month of February, the Multicultural Club also invited guest speakers Kalan R. Haywood II and Joshua Johnson to speak to students on how to achieve their goals and celebrate their successes.
Leah Duckert-Kroll, faculty liaison for the Multicultural Club and East band teacher, says that one key way people at home can support the community is to support local businesses.
“Support Black businesses (buy something!), authors (read!), musicians (listen!), etc.,” Duckert-Kroll said.
West senior Sa’maia Evans, president of the Black Student Union, says education is the best way to celebrate Black History Month. She stresses that there is much more to the Black community and experience than what it is taught in school.
“Education is primarily important, to put in your own time and effort,” Evans said.
