Stop Standing on the Sidelines

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

DSC00005I’ve spent all of my educational career teaching a subject that stresses actions have consequences. That you should always consider the costs and the benefits before making decisions in your life. The incident at school reminded me that we don’t always act rationally. One of my college professors gave me a piece of advice that I will always remember. It went something like… you should never get in a fight with a pig because everyone comes out covered in mud. Many students are learning that lesson. Their reputations have been muddied, many look foolish, and now they are left trying to wipe the mud off their faces. Continue reading

Matt Hoffmann works in the main office during his temporary role as assistant principal. He filled in for the outgoing Ryan Wilson during third quarter.

By Trina La Susa, Current Staff

Although the end of the year is just out of reach, change is on the horizon for some WBHS economics students. They will receive a new teacher, yet this “substitute” is back for the rest of the year and is actually the originally scheduled course teacher. Continue reading

The Current View: Memories of DQ

DairyQueenBuilding

Several generations of West Benders were saddened when Dairy Queen, a longtime hallmark of Main Street, unexpectedly closed. Both city locations ceased operation in late January.

What is your favorite memory of Dairy Queen?

Josh Nowak 12 E“We’d always go to DQ after all our swim meets.  The poor workers were so overwhelmed with our presence, they’d always give us plastic numbers.  But instead of giving the number tags back, we’d just steal them!  On the last day they were open, we admitted to stealing them, so they gave us all of them, 1-100, and we were so happy.  Now we will pass those tags down to all swim captains of the future to help remember the place we always went.”

The Current View: Exam Exemptions

How do you feel about the elimination of exam exemptions?

Andrew Mecus“The ability to exempt exams took some of the stress away.  It also provided a little extra motivation to get an ‘A.’  You could only exempt two classes in the first place.  If kids work hard, they should be able to exempt.”

Bloody Wednesday

Gerald Moris

Gerald Morris, East freshman, donates blood on December 11.

By Hannah Johnson, Current Staff

WBHS set a school record at December’s blood drive, collecting 499 pints of blood.

The goal for this year’s drive, which was held December 11, was to break the record for largest blood drive in Wisconsin.  Though this goal was not achieved, the 499 donated pints set a new local standard, and represented a 17% increase over last year’s total of 426 pints.

“We still hold the largest high school blood drive in the state which allows teenage students to have the opportunity to donate,” said Matt Hoffmann, faculty adviser of the WBHS student council. Continue reading

The Current View: PDA

What are your thoughts about public
displays of affection in the hallways?

Allison Craighead 2“I think that students do not need to show affection in school.  It is disturbing to look at.  It begs the question, how do you feel sitting in class with a teacher who just watched you perform a tonsillectomy on your significant other five minutes ago in the hallway?”
Allison Craighead, East senior

The Current View: Teacher Surveys

How do you feel about the new surveys that give
students a chance to rate their teachers?

Taylor Berndt“I think that the teacher surveys aren’t that great. Students all have different views on what a ‘good’ teacher is, and I don’t think it’s fair for teachers to take those hits. Plus, it’s a huge waste of class time. If someone doesn’t appreciate something a teacher is doing, talk to the teacher personally or talk to a counselor or principal.”

By Trina La Susa, Current Staff

If the West Bend Athletic Department gets its way, East and West will soon count Homestead and Nicolet as fierce rivals.
